Forest School

Forest school is a regular inspirational journey of experiences available for all children to develop self-learning. The woodland or natural environment provides opportunities for children to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem surrounded by trees and nature which is proven to develop emotional wellbeing and health.

This Learning is facilitated by our level 3 qualified practitioner who guides young people by way of experiential learning. Forest School helps young people to understand the importance and appreciation of nature and the environment. A rolling program runs throughout the year ensuring that all the children experience the changes of the 4 seasons.

Pupils learn about flora and fauna and how to manage and to protect them sustainably for the future. They learn vital skills such as fire lighting and safety, camp fire craft, cooking, shelter building, safe use of tools, woodland crafts such as whittling and all this continually evolves with the children. Working with fire and tools appropriately allows young people to understand about risk and how to manage it responsibly for their own learning and for others around them.

This developed responsibility leads, in turn, to our young people gaining a greater sense of self-worth, confidence, self-esteem, leadership, co-operation and social and communication skills.

FS is a long-term process of regular sessions, rather than one-off or infrequent visits; the cycle of planning, observation, adaptation and review links each session.

FS takes place in a woodland or natural environment to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world.

FS uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for being, development and learning.

FS aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.

FS offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.

FS is run by qualified Forest School practitioners who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice.
