Physical Education
Intent
Why do we teach this? Why do we teach it in the way we do?
At Northbourne, the intent of teaching Physical Education is to provide a curriculum which pupils will not only enjoy, but also allow them to experience a range of activities that will have a positive impact on their health, fitness and wellbeing. As stated in the National Curriculum, we are aiming to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities. We do this by adhering to the aims of the National Curriculum for Physical Education (2014) to ensure that all children:
- develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- are physically active for sustained periods of time
- engage in competitive sports and activities
- lead healthy, active lives
It is our intention to build a curriculum that enables children to develop knowledge, skills and understanding in a broad range of sporting activities, so they can perform with increasing confidence, as well as developing values and transferable life skills such as tolerance, fairness and respect.
Implementation
What do we teach? What does this look like?
The PE curriculum is taught by class teachers and a dedicated sports TA, using the Greenacre scheme. This scheme focuses on developing fundamental movement skills through a wide variety of sports, enabling the children to develop their skills and knowledge as they progress through the school. The curriculum is further enhanced by participation in local sporting activities, tournaments and competitions. We have entered school teams into local cross-country and athletics events as well as football, rugby and cricket tournaments.
Children in Years 3 – 6 attend swimming lessons at the pool at Dover Leisure Centre. They are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of 25m using a range of strokes. These lessons are concentrated on a specific year group per term, starting with Year 6 in Term 1 and continuing through the year groups until the end of Term 4.
Learning outdoors is an integral part of being at Northbourne. Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) is incorporated into our curriculum, whether that is in Forest School or part of our weekly PE timetable. Children are encouraged in a variety of team building activities as well as using maps and how to work their way around a course.
In addition to the PE Curriculum, we also strive to provide opportunities for children to access extracurricular physical activity through a wide range of sporting and active clubs available to children across all year groups.
Impact
What will this look like? By the time children leave our school they will:
By the end of each key stage, children are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study. We use the assessment provided in each unit of the Greenacre scheme of work to assess the children and plan for future lessons. We aim to improve the fitness and wellbeing of all children at Northbourne, not only through the skills taught, but through the underpinning of values and disciplines that PE promotes. Children at Northbourne make good progress in PE and are eager to represent the school at sporting events as well as take part in after school clubs.
